Bowling Green man killed in crash
A Bowling Green man died in an early-morning crash Friday in Caroline County, the Virginia State Police said.
The crash happened at 1 a.m., according to Sgt. Thomas Molnar, when a northbound Hyundai Accent crossed into the path of a southbound tractor–trailer on U.S. 17, near Hicks Land ing Road. The crash scene is also near U.S. 301.
Molnar said the Hyundai hit the Peterbilt tractor– trailer, then ran off the road and hit a tree. He said the driver, 27-year-old Joseph R. Jones, was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected. He died at the scene.
A passenger, Heather Pe ters, 37, was wearing her seat belt and suffered only minor injuries. She was taken to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment.
The driver and a passenger in the tractor–trailer were wearing their seat belts and suffered no injuries.
The highway was closed for four hours after the crash, Molnar said.
Molnar said alcohol is considered to be a factor in the crash, though the inves tigation continues.
State police handled the crash with help from the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office.
