Prosecutors seek to try teens as adults

If Spotsylvania County prosecutors have their way, two teenagers charged in last weekend’s slaying of another teen would be tried as adults.

A hearing is scheduled for Jan. 9 in Spotsylvania Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

During that hearing, Judge Phillip Fines will determine if the teens, ages 15 and 17, will be tried as juveniles or adults in the Dec. 7 shooting that killed 18-year-old Jayson Syrkes.

Syrkes’ body was found around 2:30 p.m. Saturday behind some homes near Mansfield Street, Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Sheriff’s Office said. The victim lived not far from the scene, he said.

Two teens were located in the area of River Heights Trailer Park and were charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony after giving statements to investigators, Pearce said. He said Syrkes was acquainted with both of the teens.

A funeral was held for Syrkes Thursday and was well-attended.

Fredericksburg police were on standby at his viewing Wednesday after receiving information that there may be “some unrest,” according to Fredericksburg Police Department spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe.

“We were asked to assist with large numbers and the potential for high feelings going on,” she said. “They did deal with one disturbance in the parking lot. But nothing significant.”

According to detectives, the shooting stemmed from an altercation involving the three teens. The firearm has been recovered, he said, and was sent to a crime lab for ballistic comparison.

Pearce said the teens also were charged with two counts of breaking and entering after giving statements about incidents at residences in the county. The investigation is ongoing and more charges may be filed, he said.

The identities of the teenagers are not being released because they are minors. If they are tried as adults, their names will be released.

The two defendants are being held without bond at the Rappahannock Juvenile Detention Center.

Syrkes was weeks away from being a first-time father to a baby boy, Jayson Marquis Syrkes Jr.
