Courtland completed its Battlefield District championship season by defeating Chancellor 5-1 yesterday in the district tournament championship.

Both teams receive Region I berths. Regional singles and doubles play begins next Friday at Jamestown High School. Team competion is the following day.

Battlefield singles champion Eric Lee gave Chancellor its only win at No. 1 singles. The Cougars followed with five straight victories.

BASEBALL Caroline 5, Spotsylvania 4

Caroline's Michael Williams quickly atoned for a dropped fly ball, making a strong and accurate throw to pitcher Tyler Wright, whose relay home was in time to cut down the tying run and end the game.

Wright capped a four-run fourth for the Cavaliers (8-9-1, 4-4) with a two-run single. The inning also featured a run-scoring single by Williams and a suicide squeeze by Bruce Adair.

Wright was three-for-three at-bat and also picked up a save. Williams, Kevin Miller and John Pitts of Caroline and Spencer Johnson of Spotsylvania finished with two hits apiece.

Up next is the Battlefield District tournament being played at Courtland. The Cavs oppose the Cougars in Wednesday's semifinal action.
