McCoy's goal sinks Eagles, 3-2

Kristen McCoy's three goals, the final one with 13 seconds left in regulation, propelled Roanoke College over the University of Mary Washington in a nip-and-tuck women's soccer match at the Battleground yesterday.

The Eagles' Katie Patchett gave UMW a 2-1 lead early in the second half with an unassisted goal in the 56th minute. But McCoy tied the score with her second goal of the game with 14 minutes remaining. McCoy then booted the game-winner 13 minutes later.

Mary Washington (4-6-1) will host St. Mary's College tomorrow in a key Capital Athletic Conference clash, starting at 4 p.m.

ROWING

The Eagle women's varsity eight rowing team placed first in its division as UMW's rowing teams opened their fall season at the Occoquan Challenge yesterday.

The team of Julie Milam, Kelsey Evans, Ellen Ostrow, Kelley Tice, Stephanie Mercurio, Betsy Bouton, Chia Winchester, Kadeana Langford, and Jesse Faller-Parrett finished in first place with a time of 17:23.

In other action, the women's JV eight finished third in its race with a time of 18:17; the men's pair finished fourth in its race; and the men's varsity four finished 18th in its final.

The rowing teams will next compete Oct. 15 at the Occoquan Chase regatta.

TENNIS

Eagle sophomore John James advanced to today's semifinals of the singles draw of the ITA Atlantic South regional yesterday by winning three straight matches yesterday in Salisbury, Md.

James and doubles partner Randy Loden fell in the quarterfinals of the doubles draw, 8-5.
