Eagles run out of gas in OT, fall to Hood

For 44 minutes, the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with Hood College in a high-scoring game that saw five Eagles score in double figures.

But in the final minute, Jesse Gutenkust, who led Hood with 31 points and 17 rebounds, connected on two free throws, and the Eagles couldn't respond before time ran out.

Mike Lee and Jon Pierce both scored 19 points for the Eagles while Kiernan Whitworth added 17 points, Matt Hale 14 points and Justin Baker with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The Eagles (12-6, Capital Athletic Conference 6-4) are idle until Saturday, when they host York College at 2 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The 19th-ranked Eagles had little difficultly with Hood yesterday, winning the nonconference game handily, 91-34.

Junior Sarah Flanagan led four Eagles in double figures with 15 points. Forward Debbie Bruen scored 14 points and seven rebounds and Liz Hickey and Ashton Mitchell each scored 13 points for UMW, which claimed its 12th straight victory.

The Eagles (16-2) will visit Bridgewater College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a matchup of teams that advanced to last year's NCAA Division III Sweet 16.

SWIMMING

The University of Mary Washington men's and women's swimming teams swept a dual meet from Marymount University yesterday to remain undefeated in CAC meets. The men won 96-80 and the women won 106-67.

Winners for the Eagle men included Kennard Smith in the 50 yard freestyle, Luke Moss in the 100 IM and the 50 backstroke, Dale Parker in the 50-yard butterfly and the 50-yard breaststroke, Justin Anderson inthe 100 freestyle, and the freestyle and medley relays.

The Eagle women got victories from the freestyle and medley relays, Maureen Greenlee in the 50 freestyle, Michelle Sawyer in the 100 IM and 100 freestyle, Amy Carlson in the 50 butterfly, Mallory Cruise in the 50 backstroke, Mikey Pride in the 50 breaststroke, and Sarah Wilcox in the 500 freestyle.

The teams will next compete in the CAC championships at St. Mary's (Md.) College Feb. 9-11.

On Friday, the Eagles lost to Division I George Mason in Fairfax, 143-80 in the men's meet and 128-85 in the women's meet.
